4 Things to Do After Your Parent Has a Fall

hands-walking-stick-elderly-old-person.jpgThe likelihood of a serious injury from a fall increases as you get older. If you have a parent that has fallen and has a serious injury, you may be facing a number of decisions that will need to be made. With the advancements in medical care, many people are able to return home after a fall and make a full recovery. However, it may be a wakeup call to take certain steps in regard to your parent’s care.

Prepare the Home for Your Parents to Come Home

According to the article Bringing Mom or Dad Home from the Hospital, there are several things you need to do to prepare the home for them to return. You can install safety features like a grab par in the bathroom or a lift for the stairs. Cleaning up the home to remove clutter to prevent future falls is also helpful.

Sign Up for a Medical Alert Service

A personal emergency device service can give both your parent and you the peace of mind you need, especially if your parent lives alone. The service offers the option of a fall detection system. This will contact the emergency response center if it detects a fall and contact your parent to see if everything is okay. If there is no response, help is sent right away. This service can also contact you if there is an issue.

Consider Setting Up a Medical Power of Attorney

If you do not already have a medical power of attorney set up, you may want to discuss this option. This allows one of the children to make medical decisions on behalf of your parents when they are not able to do so. This may be during a surgery or if they begin to have cognitive issues. Along with this paperwork, you may want to discuss a DNR and what measures your parents want to have done if their health begins to decline.

Set Up a Long-Term Plan

When the fall first happens, you may be focusing just on the next step—arranging surgery, and then rehab. It is important to think about the long-term solutions for your family. If you can have your parent return home, how long will it still be a safe option? What are options besides a retirement home that you can use? Discussing the plan now can make handling the next emergency much easier.
